I always want to make my own comedy film and sitcom that can be remembered by people for long time. However, there is always an issue in my mind that is how to balance the commercial and artistic part of the shows. As we can see, some of the TV shows focus on how educated it is to people, but they usually lack of popularity, some of shows focus on how to attract people to watch, it seems to be so inappropriate, which will get extreme negative critique. People is this hard to be pleased, if the show isn’t problematic enough, people will feel boring, so do we have to choose? Being boring or inappropriate?
People are nasty, we refused to admit it but the truth is the bloody, violent, inappropriate dramas attract people the most. Some shows apparently went straight forward to the topic and makes me wonder why is this kind of show even exist, the best example – Jersey Shore. The show has terrible critique, and I tried to watch one episode to figure out what exactly it is. I was blown away by how shallow, how pointless the show is. That episode I watched, the guy is angry and yelling over a girl, because she take a bite of a cake without mention to him, and that was whole episode. It is clueless for me to watch, and people said so too. However, ironically, the people inside got fame and the show is continuing for season 2,3,4…who knows when they going to stop. On the other hand, my favorite drama “Don’t lie to me” which is a criminal series based on the main character who knows how to tell if people is lying by their expression and behavior. This brilliant show is cut because of the low rate on TV. Yes, I don’t get it.
Somehow, when those show lower their standard and become more problematic, somehow it influence people’s mind and behavior too. As time goes by, I cannot help myself to notice that there is more and more weirdo on the internet or TV shows. They got famous by acting weird, doing crazy thing, then they got invite to shows, people saw it, more and more extreme people show up. For example, “Honey boo boo”, which is famous because the way she talks and her obesity. Her mother can possibly be the worst mother I had ever seen, she feed her girl so many unhealthy food, especially the famous “Go Go Juice”, it is mixed red bull with Mtn Dew, can you believe how many caffeine it had? Moreover, their family “surprisingly” are invited by a TV station and now have their own TV Show (another problematic show, woohoo). It is like a chain and it is only going to get worse.
I think some problematic thing is fun and fine to watch, but certainly there is a boundary for it. When it crosses that line, it is just not funny at all. When we look at that little girl acting funny, at the same what will she face when she grew up? Obesity? Too much caffeine? A history that she may want to erase but cant? Although people like problematic stuff, but people who try to put problematic as focus on TV, they are just awful.
